Women's World: Part Three

Linda rises from the sheets uneasy and doesn’t know why. The living room feels wrong under her feet. The flat-screen flashes a report from Diane Jones, and Linda understands that the world itself has slipped into new skin. Walls once familiar now stare at her like strangers. She bolts for the door. Panic drives her straight into Leslie on the sidewalk. Leslie doesn’t notice the fracture, and Linda keeps running until she spots Karen and spills the truth. Karen won’t take the story, so Linda retreats home. Leslie rubs the spot where they collided and visions swarm—broken shapes and one unknown word. She taps it into her phone and draws a blank. Library instead. Across town, Amanda wipes the last chair while Tanya slates her latest dead-end man. Amanda’s pulse beats for her colleague yet stays hidden until Tanya’s idle sentence lands wrong, wrong then right, and hope flares inside the confusion. Leslie skims borrowed pages, answers still missing, so she heads home to ask her wife. Linda steps inside and finds a stranger perched on her sofa. She wants something—Linda just doesn’t know what yet. Amanda finds Tanya closing the till. Words tumble clumsy, then heat replaces surprise. Their mouths meet, reckless and hungry, while scissors and bottles catch the late light.
