We Warned You Last Time

Ellen and Walter catch Terry slinking away from Gina’s front door, a brown paper bag clutched to her chest. The moment she spots them she drops it and bolts. They open the bag and stare at what’s inside. Their last warning meant nothing. They march straight to Gina’s house. Gina opens the door and finds them on her porch. Before she can speak, they push past her. Ellen’s eyes are cold; Walter’s jaw is set tight. “You’re done meddling,” Ellen says, voice low and even. “You’re putting everyone at risk, and your parents are going to hear about it.” Gina’s face goes white. “Please,” she whispers. “Don’t tell them.” Ellen’s lips curve. “We won’t—if you take your punishment right now.” Walter shuts the door. The click of the lock fills the hallway. Gina swallows, knowing the deal is already made.
