Lilith and Julie lingered over coffee while the morning light slanted across the kitchen table.
“Mia’s plane lands this afternoon,” Lilith said, her voice low and careful.
Julie raised an eyebrow. “You two bonded over your letters, right?”
“Lesbians in a country where that’s now a crime,” Lilith answered. “When the raids started, I couldn’t just keep writing her. I told her to come here.”
Julie stood, slung her bag over her shoulder. “Then I hope the welcome feels as good as the promise. Good luck.” The door clicked shut behind her.
Hours later the bell rang. Lilith opened the door and found Mia standing on the step, small suitcase in hand, cheeks flushed from travel and nerves. The second Mia crossed the threshold, her whole posture changed.
“On the way from the airport,” she breathed, eyes wide, “two women kissed right on the sidewalk. Nobody stared, nobody shouted. I almost cried.”
Lilith smiled, helpless. Mia stepped closer—then closer still—and pressed her mouth to Lilith’s, a kiss tasting of adrenaline and relief. She jerked back, mortified. “I’m sorry, I—”
Lilith caught her wrist. “Don’t be. I liked it.” Their fingers tangled; the apology melted into another kiss, deeper, hungrier.
When they broke apart, both women were breathing hard. Lilith brushed her thumb over Mia’s lower lip. “We don’t have to rush, but if you want to celebrate—really celebrate—I’m ready.”
Mia answered by sliding her hands beneath Lilith’s shirt and pressing their bodies flush together. The suitcase thudded to the floor, forgotten, as they stumbled toward the bedroom already shedding clothes.
