Slumber Party Secret

Coco sat in her room sulking when a knock pulled her from the thoughts that had darkened her evening. The door opened to Ava Sinclair standing there with a pillow and blanket clutched under one arm. She glanced around, frowning. “Where is everyone? Isn’t tonight the slumber party?”
Coco’s reply came out low and bitter—she had canceled. Trouble had surfaced over the last few weeks. Trouble named Ava herself. After Ava confessed she liked girls, Coco had decided the safest move was to scratch the entire night. She had pictured Ava staring at the others, bodies in thin pajamas, someone eventually catching on.
Hurt flashed across Ava’s face. She stepped inside, dropped the pillow and blanket onto the mattress. “Just because I’m gay doesn’t mean I want every girl I see. We’ve been friends for years. I told you because I trusted you. This is what I get?”
Coco’s shoulders fell. She apologized, admitted she’d behaved badly. The silence felt heavier than it should. Then, in a quieter voice, she invited Ava to stay anyway. Ava smiled, barely, but the smile stuck.
They eased into familiar routines, painting each other’s nails, trading music on Ava’s phone, ordering pizza when hunger hit. Time softened what remained of the awkwardness. Later, they sprawled across the bed, Coco sitting behind Ava, brushing strands that caught the lamplight. She hesitated, brush paused mid-stroke.
“I didn’t cancel because of you,” Coco confessed. “I canceled because I can’t stop looking at other girls either. If they’d stayed here, they might’ve noticed. I chickened out.”
She let the brush slip lower, voice dropping. “I keep wondering what it would feel like—to be with another girl. Since you already told me the truth, maybe… we could find out. Together.”
Ava turned, met her gaze, nodded. She promised no one would hear a word, then leaned in, breath warm against Coco’s mouth, her answer given without another sentence spoken.
