Closet Confessions

Laney Grey and Skye Blue, two seventeen-year-old girls, are lounging in Laney's bedroom when Dee Williams pokes her head through the doorway. She reminds Laney, again, that the guest-room closet must be emptied by tonight or else Laney will be grounded. The chore has hung over her head for weeks, and it does not matter who is visiting. Skye refuses to watch her friend stay stuck inside all weekend, so the moment Dee retreats, the girls head to the guest room. They start hauling out boxes and forgotten clothes until an old, ribbon-tied diary slips from a stack of sweaters. They hesitate, then open it, thinking a few innocent pages will entertain them while they work. Line after line reveals something Dee once wrote in silence: her private longing for another woman and the fear that kept the feeling locked away. The girls stare at the words, hearts racing, then carry the diary straight to Dee. She freezes when she sees the book in their hands. Anger flickers, then fades when they confess what they read. Quietly, Dee admits the entries are real. She grew up hearing every reason a woman should not want another woman, so the desire stayed unspoken. Even now, years later, it remains untouched. The girls move closer, each one taking one of Dee’s hands. They offer, gently, to show her what she once believed she could never know. Dee’s shoulders ease, her breath quickens, and the lifelong restraint finally slips.
