Movie Night

Karlee rings the bell with a cardboard box on her hip. Charlotte answers alone, the house still and heavy after their parents split. “Stay,” she says. “Movie night. Just us.” They settle on the couch under a shared blanket, a bowl of popcorn between them, lights low. On screen something jumps out; Charlotte flinches and buries her face in her hands. Karlee laughs, low and rough, and teases her sister for being so jumpy. When the credits roll, Charlotte clicks the remote again but doesn’t sit up. Instead she stretches across Karlee’s lap, cheek resting on the warm denim of her thigh. They trade a long look. Something old and unspoken passes between them. Charlotte lifts her chin and kisses her sister—quick, soft, testing. Karlee’s breath stalls. For a second she looks stunned, lips parted. Then she cocks an eyebrow, voice barely above a whisper. “Do it again,” she says. Charlotte knows the rule: Karlee never ducks a dare. She leans in a second time, slower, mouth certain, and Karlee answers—tongue, heat, hand sliding under the hem of Charlotte’s shirt until the blanket slips and the bowl tips to the floor, popcorn scattering across dark wood.
