The doorbell rings. Kenzie opens it to Mrs. Doubtfucher—an older woman with a voice so prim it could slice glass. Kenzie stumbles through the name twice before laughing and apologizing. “It’s pronounced Doubt-Fyooker, dear,” the housekeeper corrects gently. “A fine German name.” Kenzie explains why she needs help: her ex-husband is back, and his eighteen-year-old daughter Mackenzie now lives here too. A laugh, light and quick: “Women’s intuition, I suppose.” A knock lands on Mackenzie Moss’s bedroom door. Mackenzie calls for her to come in. The housekeeper steps inside, closes the door behind her, and drops the act the moment they’re alone. “I’m Alexis,” she says, voice suddenly soft. “Your step-mother.” Mackenzie’s breath leaves in a rush. The memories hit—her father’s fury, Alexis being cut off from her life, the ache she never expected to feel again. Alexis touches her face, gentle as if testing whether the girl is real. They meet halfway, mouths colliding, the long kiss thick with everything they’ve been denied.
