Sister's Mid-Life Crisis

Cherie and Kenzie had always called each other sisters. Now they sat across from one another at Cherie’s long dining table, wine untouched, the silence like a third guest. Cherie looked frayed at the edges, eyes glassy, lips pressed tight. When Kenzie finally asked what was wrong, the answer came out flat, like stones dropped on a table.
Cherie’s marriage was over. It had been over for years, really; no spark left, just polite silence between two people slowly turning to strangers. There was somebody else, someone who kept her up at night, someone who made her chest ache with want. It was a woman. That single fact landed between them, heavy and strange, but Kenzie moved fast to the caring place she always found. Of course she would stand by her sister. Of course.
Cherie, though, kept looking at Kenzie like a woman looking through a window she could no longer pretend wasn’t there. Her gaze lingered too long on Kenzie’s mouth, her words edged too intimate. When Kenzie reached across to squeeze her hand, Cherie didn’t pull away. Instead she said the thing aloud.
“It’s you. The woman I want to grow old with is you.”
Kenzie snatched her hand back as if scorched. She rose, walked to the window, then came back again, air tight in her lungs. Cherie watched with something like terror tightening her throat. Kenzie paced once more, rubbing the back of her neck, and Cherie could feel herself shrinking.
Then Kenzie stopped. She looked at the woman who had loved her for years and still saw her sister, yet felt her pulse jump lower, hotter, and confusion boiled into something electric.
They reached for each other like people wading into warm water they never expected would feel this inviting. Lips met first, tentative but unyielding; hands followed, curious, hungry. Clothes gave way to bare skin on the same table where the confession had begun. Kenzie parted Cherie’s thighs and slid her tongue deep, tasting slick heat; Cherie answered with eager fingers, stretching her open before straddling her again, hips driving fast and wet against wet. Clits dragged over clits, every slick thrust drawing desperate moans until they came together, wet thighs shaking, throats hoarse.
When it was done they lay tangled, damp skin cooling in the half-light, still unsure of maps or futures. But the want no longer felt forbidden. It felt, simply, like coming home.
