The Wrong Word

Amirah moves through the room like she is still a student and not the one who needs saving. Blonde hair falls forward when she leans over Tiffany’s notebook, quiet as always, shoulders drawn in tight. Tiffany watches the pale slope of her neck, the way her small breasts press against the desk when she reaches across. They are only supposed to be translating sentences. Then the note slips free. Tiffany unfolds the paper. The line is written in careful script: Tiffany’s laughter feels like sunlight through water. I wish I could drown in it. Heat rises under Tiffany’s skin, but she keeps the page in her hand. She waits until their next session to answer.
