Spun: Part One

Maggie came home from college early June, the summer stretching out like wet velvet on the hardwood. Tonight her old crew would pack the living room: Lea, all wild hair and laughter; Rachel, sharp smile and daring tongue; Morgan, the girl Maggie swears she’s just close with when anyone asks. Only Jemma knows the truth—every inch of it.
Jemma has Maggie pinned to the kitchen counter ten minutes after stepping through the door. Fingers already slick, she curls deep until Maggie’s thighs shake and her soft moans echo off the fridge. “Breathe, birthday girl,” Jemma whispers, thumb sweeping over her clit in lazy circles. Two quick thrusts and Maggie breaks open, clutching at tattooed shoulders. Jemma leans in, tongue tasting sweat at her collarbone, and does not stop until Maggie drips down her wrist.
Cleaned up, Maggie tugs fairy lights along the ceiling beams while Jemma hangs photos of the four girls in high-school glory. They laugh about reckless beach weekends and stolen cigarettes, but every burst of anticipation loops back to Morgan. “I’m gone before the others show,” Jemma says, brushing lips over Maggie’s ear. “No rumors.”
Virginia appears in the hallway, eyebrow cocked. “Nervous much?” She catches the flinch when Morgan’s name drops; big-sister radar working overtime. Maggie waves her off, but her pulse trips anyway.
The house smells of warm sugar when Lea and Rachel tumble in, squealing and hugging. Morgan arrives last—flushed, lipstick perfect—and a brunette loops an arm around her waist. “This is Kate. Hope it’s cool if she joins?” Kate offers a dimpled grin. Maggie’s throat works around a smile that never lands.
Bottles spin on the coffee table once the drinks flow. Lips lock in quick, silly pecks, music thumping under everyone’s laughter. Maggie counts the spins that land on Morgan and Kate, the tender presses that follow. Her stomach knots; she slips upstairs, closet light off, hand inside her shorts. Quick circles, sharp breaths, a single broken whisper of Morgan’s name, and she sinks against winter coats until her knees steady.
Downstairs again, Lea’s missing and Virginia’s door is shut, giggles leaking beneath it. Maggie barely registers. The bottle keeps spinning—each wet smack a reminder. The doorbell rings. Bree the delivery driver balances three boxes and a six-pack, reading the sign above the doorway aloud: “Welcome back, graduates!” Then breezy: “So which one of you brave souls is the birthday girl with the girlfriend here?” Maggie feels the words hit like cold water and forces a laugh, shaking her head, the sting spreading through her chest like ink.
