Kayley slipped the white satin over her head and let it settle on her curves. The fabric shimmered under the lights, clinging where her skin touched silk. She turned, imagining vows, rice, one woman waiting at the end of an aisle—Vicki, in her mind, stepping forward. The fantasy sent a flush low between her legs.
The door clicked. Vicki stood there, briefcase still in hand, mascara-dark lashes blinking hard. Kayley froze mid-twirl, white tulle piled at her feet like snow.
“I’m sorry,” Kayley whispered, wrestling the back zipper. It caught under her shoulder blade. “I just wanted—” She tugged again; nothing gave. “Help?”
Vicki set her keys down, crossed the room. Her fingers brushed the zipper teeth, warmed Kayley’s spine. The bodice loosened and Kayley sighed in relief, until the thin silk tore with a soft rip that sounded louder than either of them.
Silence. Kayley’s eyes shone wet. “I’ve had a crush on you since the day you let me taste your lipstick in the club bathroom. I kept it because I didn’t want to lose us.”
Vicki’s jaw worked. “I’ve seen the signs—caterer double-booked, florist drunk, every vendor suddenly unlucky. Things break for a reason.” She loosened the last pins. Cool air kissed Kayley’s bare back. “If you’d told me, we could have faced it before the dress ever fit.”
Kayley turned. Their mouths met first, hesitant, then desperate. Hands slid beneath torn lace; Vicki’s breath hitched against her throat.
“If we’re meant for this,” Vicki said, voice low, “we owe it to the marriage we haven’t had yet.”
Kayley leaned in, heart pounding like the beat of unfinished music. “Okay,” she breathed, sliding satin the rest of the way to the floor. “Show me if we fit.”
