Love At First Aid

Scarlett stands in her driveway, still a little woozy after clipping her own garage. Madison, her neighbor and EMT, watches from across the fence. She drops the trash bag in her hands and crosses over. "Let me take a look," she says. Scarlett nods, grateful and vaguely embarrassed, then leads her inside.
The living room feels cooler. Madison has Scarlett sit on the couch, then runs gentle hands over her shoulders, the sides of her neck, checking pupils, reflexes, any sign of hidden harm. They talk as Madison works: how long Scarlett has lived here, which coffee shop Madison recommends, and the odd pauses when their eyes hold a second too long. The air changes, something starting to hum between them.
"I could stay the night," Madison offers, voice low. "Just to keep an eye on you." Scarlett flushes, a bloom of heat that has nothing to do with the bump on her head, and agrees without thinking it through.
Madison returns to the examination, palms sliding down Scarlett’s arms, fingers brushing over her rib cage. Her touch lingers. She admits the crush she has carried since Scarlett moved in two years ago—a quiet secret kept during morning waves and polite hellos. Scarlett’s pulse kicks harder under Madison’s fingertips.
The checkup ends. No concussion, only a mild bruise on her forearm. Madison turns to get a cold cloth. Scarlett stops her with a light grip on the wrist.
"I’m hot everywhere," Scarlett says, voice husky. "Maybe we skip the ice and handle the heat a different way."
Madison’s smile tilts, slow and certain. "Tell me how."
