Lucky Penny

Kenna kept her lucky penny in a small velvet satchel. She rubbed it that morning, whispering the same words she always did: make today mine. She felt certain Veronica would finally hand her the promotion. Instead the boss called her in and said they were letting people go, and Kenna’s name sat on the list. The apology sounded polite, almost kind, but the door still closed on five years of work. Kenna gathered her few things without drama. She straightened her frame on the way out and reminded herself she had that date, and the new heels waiting by her bed, and maybe tonight would make up for everything. Then the text arrived: her girlfriend was done. Kenna read it twice on the curb, heels suddenly ridiculous in her hands. At home she hurled the penny into the night and slammed the door. A sharp knock answered. The woman outside wore a slim grey coat and gave her name—Penny. When Kenna asked why, the stranger recalled every misstep of the day and every private wish Kenna had ever pressed into the coin. Convinced, Kenna stepped aside. Penny cupped her face and kissed her slowly, like something long promised and finally delivered. They undressed each other in the narrow hall, breath mixing, laughter breaking through. Kenna sank to her knees first, parting Penny’s thighs, tasting the salt-sweet skin between them until Penny’s fingers threaded tight in her hair. Then Penny lifted her, carried her to the bed, and returned the favor, tongue steady, fingers deep and rhythmic until Kenna’s back arched clean off the sheets. Later they moved together face-to-face, legs locked, hips rolling in that slow perfect rhythm that builds and hangs and finally breaks into soft, shaking cries. When it was over they stayed tangled, Penny stroking Kenna’s hair while the room cooled around them. The day had stripped everything away, and yet here was the one thing that stayed—warm skin, shared breath, the faint metallic tang of the penny still on Kenna’s tongue.
