From Bad To Worse

Sabina sits behind the wheel, engine idling, and spits her fury into Bella’s voicemail. The power blew out downtown so she’s buried in catch-up work, she’s locked out of the house she owns, and the door and her girlfriend’s line both stay silent. She punches the call to a locksmith and tosses the phone onto the passenger seat. Half an hour later a deadbolt clicks and she steps through the door, done with the world for one day. Music drifts from the bedroom hallway. Every step tightens the knot in her stomach. She pushes the door open. Bella’s riding Bunny Colby like she’s forgotten anyone else exists. Both women freeze. Sabina’s face burns white-hot. “The worst fucking day,” she spits. “And I find you with her?” Bella stammers apologies, voice cracking. “I’ll do anything. Anything, baby.
