Working Off Her Debt

Mona Wales slams open the bedroom door. Aliya Brynn sprawls across silk sheets, phone in hand. "You spent what?" Mona snaps. Her stepdaughter meets her eyes, unflinching. Someone has to buy the clothes. Mona tells her chores will settle the debt—every last cent, starting now. Days bleed together. Aliya scrubs, vacuums, folds. Mona stops her in the hall: only halfway done. That tips the scale. Aliya drops the laundry basket. She steps in close, fingers brushing the inside of Mona’s wrist. Her voice lowers, velvet over steel. One mutual hunger could wipe the slate clean. Mona draws a breath, startled. Aliya’s free hand finds the small of Mona’s back and presses. Heat sparks through thin cotton. "Much more fun than chores," Aliya whispers. Mona feels her pulse hitch, then nods. Clothes fall. They crash into each other against the wall—tongues, teeth, urgent fingers digging into soft flesh. Every wet slide of skin pays the balance.
