Alison finds Nina in the kitchen, arms deep in a sink of bubbles. She lingers. Complains. Says Marie never makes time for her anymore, that her own mother has forgotten what it means to be a mom. Nina listens with the same soft patience she uses on Lily when the girl storms in past curfew. She won’t bad-mouth Marie, but she won’t let Alison tear herself down either. She admits her own stumbles, the fights, the slammed doors. The air between them warms. Alison leans in, kisses her once, a quick, daring brush of lips. Nina’s breath catches. She glances toward the hall, half-expecting footsteps, yet she stays. Her fingers find the hem of Alison’s top. Another kiss follows, slower, hungrier, and Nina gives in. If Alison needs comfort, Nina is willing to take some for herself while the house is still quiet.
