Given Up On Love

Alison Rey walked into the massage parlor looking wiped out. Whitney Wright glanced up from the reception desk, smiled, and asked what brought her in. Alison barely answered. She followed Whitney anyway, past the hallway door, and dropped her robe without ceremony.
The sheet covered her body. Nothing else did. Whitney’s hands pressed straight into the knots, working the tight line between shoulder blades, the hard ridge along her spine. Muscle after muscle gave way under her thumbs. She paused once to ask if Alison wanted more pressure.
Alison said the tension started at work. She told Whitney she counseled couples every day. Lately she wondered if the whole system was pointless. She watched marriages collapse. She saw people lie and cheat. The stories piled up until she stopped believing any of it was real.
Whitney’s palms slid along the back of Alison’s thigh, pressing slow, firm circles above her knee. She told Alison she only saw one kind of couple. Two people locked into marriage, legal and polite. She mentioned another kind—the women who cooked together for nine years and still danced in their kitchen when the radio played. Real heat didn’t vanish just because the labels changed.
Alison breathed through her nose. Her legs parted slightly. The sheet slipped lower. Whitney noticed and let the silence stretch until it pulled tight, then she traced the dip behind Alison’s knee with her knuckles and asked, soft and careful, if Alison was curious about the other kind of love. The one that didn’t look like the clients she hated. Alison stayed quiet for a breath. Her hips shifted, slow, like she was listening.
