Lucy coasts down the block on her board, earbuds in, hips swaying to the beat. Ellen shoots out of her driveway in a rush, slams the brakes, but the front bumper still clips a wheel. Lucy hits the pavement hard and tears skin off her knee. Ellen bolts from the car, muttering sorry after sorry, then nods toward the house and offers to clean her up. Inside, Ellen kneels, smooths a bandage over the scrape, and spots the white buds left on the table. Curious, she holds them up. Lucy grabs one, slides the other into Ellen’s ear, and cues the track. Heavy bass fills the small space between their faces. Their eyes meet. Ellen’s smile turns shy. Lucy leans in, slow, sure, and kisses her.
