Role Models: Making A Difference

Sofi Ryan steps into the hospital buzzing with purpose. Her first shift. Dr. Riley Reyes walks beside her, clipboard in hand, each room introduced with the same flat voice. Where Sofi sees opportunity Riley only sees breakdown. Conversation turns brittle. Sofi stops and asks what is eating at her. Riley denies it, but Sofi presses. The old Riley once sparkled when she talked about medicine; this one does not. Afraid she has crossed a line, Sofi apologizes. Riley says no apology is needed. Years ago the job gave her belief. Those years are gone. Sofi argues Riley is still saving lives, still the reason Sofi chose this path. Maybe Riley only needs someone pulling her forward again. Riley exhales and steps in for a hug, shoulders softening. Sofi moves closer, lips brushing her ear, suggesting Riley can let go too. She nods them both toward the empty bed behind the curtain. Scrubs land in a hurried pile. Riley pulls Sofi on top, then folds her open beneath her. Thighs meet. Tongues find slick heat. They ride one another until both bodies shake and soften. Sofi watches Riley’s face go peaceful, lighter than it has been all morning, and hopes the message stays.
