Wires Crossed

Aria Lee and Jill Kassidy sit across from each other, flashcards in hand, swapping answers back and forth. The study session drags on the way college exams do—relentless and dull. Jill stretches, bare soles brushing Aria’s thigh, then settles them there with a grin. Aria freezes, books open across her knees. Her hand hovers for a second before she starts, slow circles at the arch, skin gliding against skin. Jill keeps the quiz running, though her sentences lag and her words trail.
The touch drifts upward. Knuckles trace the soft muscle of calf, knee, then slip inside the hem of Jill’s shorts. Aria’s palm lands on Jill’s thigh like it belongs there, thumb stroking once, twice, pressing in without intention. Her other hand still flips pages. She hasn’t noticed Jill watching, lips parted, color creeping up her neck.
Jill exhales, pulse kicking. She leans in quick, plants a kiss that’s barely more than contact. Aria jerks back, eyes wide. Silence. Jill says the signals were impossible to misread. Aria stammers—she’s been wound tight, meant nothing, sorry—yet their hands haven’t left each other. Jill’s fingers stroke the inside of Aria’s wrist, slow, coaxing. Another kiss is offered, closer this time, lingering. Aria’s lashes lower. She tilts, meets it. The cards slide to the floor unnoticed.
