Mr. and Mrs. Howard fight about leaving their 18-year-old daughter Susan home alone. The parents bicker while Susan lies under the covers with a thermometer in her mouth, pretending to be sick. She presses the heating pad to her forehead, faking a fever, hoping they'll believe the act. Brock Doom snaps that she is an adult, while Vera King worries someone should watch her. After Susan swears she will rest and take care of herself, they finally agree to leave.
Their footsteps fade down the driveway. Susan kicks the covers off. She pulls the hot water bottle out from her shirt and grins at the quiet house. She begins to dance around in her underwear until the phone rings. A heavy breath answers her hello. She hangs up, convinced it's a prank. It rings again. This time the panting grows louder, faster. Nervous, Susan whispers for her parents. The line dies. She shakes it off and turns back to the TV for her scary movie.
A pounding shakes the window. Susan freezes. The same noise hammers her bedroom door next. She creeps forward, cracks the knob, and stares into a dark empty hallway. Relief collapses when the front doorbell shrieks. Through the peephole she sees a frantic young woman—Amy, nineteen—banging on the frame.
Once inside Amy blurts that something is hunting her. It wants to get inside her. The creature hates light, so Amy yanks out a grid of softly glowing pegs from her backpack. Then she strips her torn clothes and tells Susan they must touch skin-to-skin. When Susan's fingers finally skim bare flesh, heat floods between them. They wrap together, legs and mouths sliding until every inch of their bodies presses close and the rest of the world fades. Amy might still be hiding something, and Susan can feel it in every trembling breath between them.
