A Most Special Occasion

Vera sat on the couch when Alina walked in holding two glasses. They smiled at each other, soft and sweet. Vera thanked her, and Alina called her only nineteen with a grin. Vera asked if she was sure she wanted to stay in. It was their anniversary, after all. Alina said yes—she wanted Vera all to herself. They lifted their glasses and toasted. Alina spoke first, voice low and full of feeling. Vera answered the same way. Their mouths met. They eased back against the cushions, eyes still locked. Alina asked if Vera could believe a whole year had passed. Vera shook her head. It had felt quick, and yet it was the best year she had ever lived. She never expected to find love like this, not at her age, not under these strange conditions. Alina stroked her hand and said better late than never. They laughed, then fell quiet. Alina broke the silence. Did Vera ever feel guilty about how things started? Vera answered no. She reminded Alina that neither of them had meant to hurt anyone. The heart simply wanted what it wanted, and hers had wanted Alina. Alina asked when Vera had first known their affair was something deeper. Vera said it was the weekend he was away—the morning she opened her eyes and saw Alina lying beside her, sunlight on her skin, and knew it in that instant. Alina whispered that she would never forget that time. She had a surprise for Vera. She told her to close her eyes and wait. Vera obeyed. When she opened them again, Alina was on one knee with a small box in her hands and a diamond ring glinting inside. Alina asked Vera to marry her, voice thick. Vera stalled, breathless, then reached behind the cushions and pulled out her own ring box. She dropped to one knee as well. They knelt facing each other, rings ready. Alina pressed a hand to her mouth. Vera smiled and said Alina had stolen her line. They came together hard, mouths open and hungry. Alina pulled back only long enough to say the answer was yes, absolutely. Vera answered the same. They slid the rings onto each other’s fingers, the metal cool against heated skin. Vera said she didn’t care what people thought—a mother and her stepdaughter getting married. All that mattered was that they belonged to each other now. Alina said the same. Their bodies closed the last distance between them, tongues sliding, hands searching, fabric whispering as it fell away. Every nerve seemed awake, every touch new and necessary. They sank deeper into the couch, skin to skin, breath hot and ragged, celebrating their future in the only language that mattered.
