Surprise Proposal

Adriana stands before the mirror, muttering the same proposal under her breath, but nothing lands right. She keeps going, again and again, already picturing the sapphire ring in Alina’s glass at dinner. One clean sip, then the ring, then the question. Perfect. When she turns the ring over in her palm, the sparkle makes her breath catch. Tonight’s going to stun Alina, no doubt. At the table Alina sits, eyes warm, and Adriana pours the champagne and slips the ring in. The two glasses lift, the toast starts, and Alina knocks hers back in two careless swallows. Gone. Adriana’s face blanks, then tightens. She watches Alina’s throat work and knows. Alina catches the panic, concern replacing laughter. "Did you just… were you trying to ask me to marry you?" The words snap Adriana out of her shock, but not fast enough. Alina pushes her chair aside, grabs Adriana’s face with both hands, and kisses her hard enough to steal any answer. Adriana tries to pull back, tries to say this isn’t the moment. Alina’s already unbuttoning, guiding her wife-to-be backward across the floor, whispering that the ring can wait; she’s fucking her girl now.
